In March 2021, Elle Hooper sold a house to Yvonne Gartner. Although this house was an absolute dream and made Yvonne feel like her wishes had come true, no one could have possibly foreseen the beautiful love story that this sale would produce.
It wasn’t long after meeting one another that Yvonne and Elle became thick as thieves, spending evenings together sipping Syrah and talking the night away. It was during one of these decadent evenings that they happened upon an incredible idea: their two children, Natasha and Brett, were destined to be together.
And so began two years of deliberating, plotting and planning. After countless rolls of the eyes, sighs of dismissal and cringeworthy declines, Natasha and Brett reluctantly agreed to meet, if it meant the nagging would subside.
Monday, the 20th of February 2023 was the eve of their first date. They met in Kalk Bay for dinner, and over a poké bowl, they began to get to know each other.
One week after their first date, Brett met Natasha’s parents. Three weeks after this, they professed their love for one another. Three months later, they had uprooted their lives and moved to London together. Needless to say, their relationship was a rollercoaster from the very first moment.
The adventures did not end here. A long, taxing and difficult time in London ensued, during which Natasha and Brett found their bright, colourful selves fading. They made the only decision they could: to move back to Cape Town and restart their lives together once more.
And so, in February of 2024, only one year after meeting each other, they moved abroad together for the second time. Of course, as wonderful as it was to be back on African soil, this period did not come without its challenges. Natasha and Brett encountered several barriers as well as loss, but they did not lose sight of what was truly important to them: each other.
They pushed through the hardships they faced, and they came out on the other side of it happier, stronger, and more in love than ever! They travelled to Greece to celebrate their perseverance and love, and it was here where Brett asked Natasha to marry him. Her response included the three easiest letters she had ever strung together: YES!
And so, having met through an unlikely twist of fate, Natasha and Brett have packed more love, adventure, and resilience into two years than many do in a lifetime. From a reluctant first date to moving from Cape Town to London and back again, weathering life’s storms and celebrating its joys, they have faced every challenge hand in hand. Through it all, their love has only deepened, proving that sometimes, mothers really do know best!
